The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, occurring in the early hours of December 3, 1984, remains one of the most horrific industrial disasters in history. It unfolded at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, where a deadly leak of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas occurred.

What is Bhopal Gas Tragedy?

UCIL – Main Cause

Union Carbide India Limited was a Production plant of Union Carbide Corporation. In India UCIL was established in 1969 in Bhopal to sell a Pesticide named Sevin.

Self production of MIC-

In the starting 10 years, UCIL used to import Methyl Isocyanate to make Sevin Pesticide, In 1979 Indian Government permitted UCIL to self produce MIC in their Production Plant. This was the point where from the devastation began.

Share Distribution of UCIL-

UCC had the largest share part in UCIL with the share % of 50.9, rest 49.1% were owned by indian investors in which Indian Gov. and Gov. Controlled Banks were included.

Lack of Maintenance

The company couldn’t sell their products as their estimation and they began to avoid the safety maintenances and tools to reduce expenses. Even at 2nd December the reason of Gas Leak was the improper maintenance and lack of safety tools.

2nd December 1984 –

At 2a.m. a regular maintenance were going on workers were cleaning the Chemical Processing Plants with water, Recently UCIL connected the Processing Units with MIC Storage Tanks.

Keep in Mind that the Reaction of MIC and Water is an Exothermic reaction it means water shouldn’t reach in the storage tanks. A device named slip blind is used to seperate the tanks but to reduce expenses UCIL avoided the safety devices.

Even the safety systems were under maintenance at that night. As the reaction started the floor over the storage tanks began to break and the gas spreaded over the city.

In this incident more than 5% of Bhopal’s population and more than 2000 animals died that night.
